During Qing Dynasty, this is an accessories, together with a feather on the hat of the Government Officer.
Ruyi in Chinese means satisfaction, going well, or things going as desired. It is frequently used in auspicious designs loved by the people. Originally, ruyi was a bamboo article used to scratch one's back. At that time, it was called buqiuren or foshoubing, meaning "not to ask others for help" or "a handle of the Buddha". Later, people changed the hand-shaped ruyi into a shape combining that of glossy ganoderma and cloud. Glossy ganoderma is believed to be able to help stimulate human body's vital forces and strengthen the physique. It is said that the plant can save the life of a seemingly hopeless patient or make one to live as long as 100 years. When yuyi, glossy ganoderma, and cloud are put together, they form a design with a graceful charm and a profound meaning, enough to arouse healthy, joyful feelings.
